Odds & Ends
Born and raised just south of Detroit, James Caruso is a Canadian-Italian designer currently residing in Switzerland.
He cut his teeth working both with and for: The Bjarke Ingels Group (DK), Jamie Wolfond Studio (CA), MOS-Meredith, Sample (USA), McKinley Studios (CA), and Procuratorial (CA) across a range of scales.
He is a candidate for a Master’s degree in product design from ECAL (CH) studying under the guidance of Anniina Koivu, BIG-GAME, Camille Blin, Christophe Guberan, Erwan Bouroullec, Industrial Facility, Maxwell Ashford, and Philippe Malouin. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in architectural studies at the Azrieli School of Architecture (CA) with a study abroad term (UK).
His work explores the relationships between craftsmanship, industrial research, digital fabrication, manufacturing and their contexts—whether a chair in a room, a tent on a mountain, or a community centre in a city.
Behind the start of every project is an observation. Sometimes that means zooming in or zooming out of the material world; from a sewing thimble to an ornithologist’s research station.
